Construction of Casa Tecno begins

With great expectation and enthusiasm, the team of scientists of the GWR (Greywater Treatment and Reuse) Project began the construction of a pilot house at the CTEC Technology Park, located in the Carén Lagoon, where the systems for the reuse of domestic greywater will be implemented, developed jointly by the Universidad de Santiago de Chile, the Universidad Andrés Bello and the Universidad del Bío-Bío, within the framework of the Anillo-ANID ATE220024 project, which will last until 2026.
Dr. Esteban Quijada, Usach academic and director of the project, explained that the "Casa Tecno: Vivienda Social Sustentable" is a 55 square meter building and "its main attraction is that the roof and some of the walls will have their surfaces covered with plant species that will be irrigated with treated gray water, generating a sustainable solution for the reuse of this water and to achieve thermal and acoustic insulation," he said.
The reuse of domestic graywater will be carried out through the implementation of a coupled process of electrochemistry and membranes. The academic emphasizes that the technology that will be installed in this pilot house will demonstrate that it is possible to have simple and accessible technical solutions that can be installed in practically all homes.

Dr. Camila Burgos, an expert in architecture, construction and urban planning technology, will be in charge of the construction of the "Casa Tecno", which, once completed at the end of the year, can be visited by elementary, high school and university students to learn about the gray water recovery strategies and analyze the details of the project.
For example, he says, the treated water could also be used to flush toilets, "since the aim is to contribute to reducing the consumption of domestic drinking water, contributing innovative strategies to reduce the impact of the water shortage affecting the world and, especially, our country", she emphasizes.
Casa Tecno is currently under construction in the CTEC Technology Park, located in the Carén Lagoon.
